Are you ready to discover the most authentic Mallorcan gastronomy? You might not be quite ready for the explosion of delicious flavours that awaits you, but as the adage goes, no risk no fun, isn’ it? We assure you that this time, the risk will be worth it. Keep reading and discover the best food of Mallorca and the 3 typical dishes that you must try without fail.

Frito Mallorquin

At the first position of this ranking, there can be no other dish than the mythical Frito Mallorquin! We must anticipate that it is a gastronomic experience, and you cannot leave the island without having to sink your teeth into. In addition, you can find it at any time of the year in almost any restaurant.

This traditional dish, one of the oldest in Mallorca, consists of frying in olive oil all the main ingredients, which are basically: meat, roast lamb or kid (liver, lung, heart, etc.), onion (or chives), red pepper, potatoes. All seasoned with garlic, pepper, bay leaf, fresh fennel and salt. You can also add chilli pepper.

There are also other versions of the "frit mallorquí", such as the “frito de matanza” (during the slaughter season), the “frito de marisco” only with seafood or variations only with vegetables or with chicken.

Arròs Brut

Mmmm, just thinking about it makes our mouth water. The brut rice, or "Arròs Brut" in Mallorcan, is one of the most traditional dishes of Mallorca. The name literally means "dirty rice", but quiet, this peculiar name is due to the large number of ingredients and spices that the dish carries and "dirtifies" it, giving it a characteristic dark colour.

The delicious “Arròs Brut” has a special flavour that, if you're not from Mallorca, you probably have never tasted it. And you must! The dish consists of rice soup with vegetables and meat (chicken, rabbit and pork). To this also add several spices, including nutmeg or cloves, for example, and some people also put the Mallorquin sausage “sobrassada” or also it is prepared with snails. In general, the “arròs brut” is cooked in a large clay pot typical of Mallorca.

Ensaimada

This sweet celebrity you may already know, or at least her name will ring a bell on you. But do not worry, you're about to meet her and you'll love her. We could not finish this top 3 without including a typical Mallorcan dessert: the ensaimada from Mallorca!

It is one of the most typical desserts of Mallorcan cuisine, and it is a dough made from flour, water, sugar, eggs, sourdough or yeast, a pinch of salt, and saïm (reduced pork lard). The dough is then baked into a spiral shape and commonly sprinkled with icing sugar. We recommend you to accompany it with a rich hot chocolate in winter, or an almond ice cream in summer.

The most traditional ensaimada would be the "ensaimada llisa", which means without filling, but there are also other variants stuffed with cream, angel hair, another speciality of Mallorca, or pastry cream.

Other Mallorcan foods you must try are:

• Tumbet

• Trampó

• Suckling pig roasted in Majorcan style

• Pa amb oli

• Coca de trampó

• Cremadillos, cocarrois and panades (typical pastry)
