Discover first hand the most traditional festivals of Majorca

Majorca is more than a sun and beach Island, it is an island full of fun and stories that will make you travel thousands of years back. Every town of the island has its own festivals, that stand out for their charms and the enthusiasm they enjoy it.

In this article, we name some of the festivals that you could enjoy from May until September together with your family and friends.

 

Moors and Christians Festival in Soller

This festival one of the most famed of Majorca, congregating thousands of people to watch and take part of the recreation of the victory of the Sollerics over the Turkish pirates. A staging of the battles between saracens and Christians in the beach of Repic. At the end everyone sings La Balaguera, the Majorca anthem, to celebrate victory. It takes place on the third Monday of May.

 

San Juan night

Like is traditional in many places across Spain, every year the celebration takes place during the San Juan night to welcome the summer. In Majorca the people go in great number to he beaches and perform rituals to attract good luck and stay protected during the year. 

The beaches are full of candles and music that surround the groups of people. By midnight people get into the water and follow different rituals: burning lists of wishes, release lanterns or simply entering the water backwards and diving completely in.

In Palma you can enjoy fire shows and concerts in Parc de la Mar and ses Voltes.

You can also find different towns like Deià, Mancor de la Vall y Son Serera, where San Juan is the patron saint and they celebrate it in a different way. it is celebrated the night of the 23rd to the 24th of June.

 

San Bartomeu Festival in Soller

In Agust during several days, the town of Soller celebrate its patron saint festival of San Bartolomeu, when the town is filled with life and fun with a great variety of sport activities, folk dances, fireworks and concerts.

August the 24th it is the Night of the Fire and the square fills with red with a fireworks show. Through the streets run the correfocs (fire-runners) that, together with the buildings that surround the square,  gives an unbelievable and unique sensation worth living.

The last day of the festival ends with a fireworks castle. It is celebrated from the 16th to the 25th of August.

 

Canamunt y Canavall

This party recreates another bloody and historic battle that took place in Majorca during the XVII century between two sides in Palma

The participants divided in two sides, Canamunt team wearing red tops or Canavall team wearing yellow. Both sides start from their historic areas and get together at the Parc de la Mar where the battle takes place. 

The recreation Consists in a water battle between everyone, where water guns, water balloons and buckets are allowed. It is celebrated the first Sunday of September
